The Endearing Traits
Long lived... Huskies have life span in the 15 year range. SUPER
choice for first medium / large family pet.
Friendly... Friendly and more friendly. Huskies do extremely well with
strangers, children, the elderly etc., if you are looking for a guard dog however.... look for another breed.
Clean... A clean dog? You Bet! Huskies have low to no "dog smell", Ideal for people with dog allergies, (see grooming is essential below)
Quiet... Huskies may loose the occasional "howl at the moon" and
"talk" to you, but they are not barking dogs.
Intelligent... Huskies are very smart dogs now at times this may be considered a "GOTCYA" when the little angles figure out how to open
the dog food bin....... :) They are capable of being very highly trained.
The "GOTCHA" Traits
Huskies dig... With training your Husky can be taught to confine its
digging to one area, but dig they will. There are several methods for
curbing the digging habits of your Husky, chief among them is
exercise as Husky's tend to dig more when bored. Huskies RUN... While it should be obvious that a dog bread for more than 3000 years to pull sleds overland for great distances like to run... DO NOT underestimate this instinct. Huskies should be confined, tethered, fenced, kenneled, leashed or otherwise restrained at ALL times. They can not help themselves, the urge to run is strong from a very early age, and unfortunately their sense of direction must have been one of the things sacrificed to gain other qualities... A husky will be miles away before he wonders just exactly what direction home is.
Time... Huskies are pack animals... if you can not spend time with
them DAILYdo not buy one, and it is far better to have more than one
Husky. We are not trying to sell pairs for our own sake but for the
animals. If you wish to breed your puppy we will work with you as well
as other kennels to provide suitable mates. While humans are
accepted into a Husky's pack it is not the same as another Husky.
STRONG bonds are forged and maintained with other Huskies, and as
we have stated we have other species of dogs and there is camaraderie but there is, in a Huskies view, a big gap between "friend and playmate" and "pack member".
Grooming is essential... Huskies tend to shed several times a year
and careand time should be taken to groom them. This greatly
reduces the amount of hair found around the house, reducing
allergens, full vacuum cleaner bags, AC Filters, etc. While it is not
specifically harmful to not groom your Husky the act of grooming is a
superior bonding establishment / reinforcement activity.
Huskies are VERY social animals, they should not be
purchased as guard dogs. While Huskies look fierce and wolf like
(as they ARE a wolf breed) and may frighten all manner of people who
come to your home while you are away, they would be more likely beg
for attention (or treats) from a burglar before offering any resistance to
them.
